Khairi moves SC for ISI political cell abolition
Staff Report
ISLAMABAD: An application was filed in the Supreme Court (SC) on Wednesday seeking abolition of political cell of the Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) to ensure free and fair election in the country, besides taking up a reference of misconduct against the Lahore High Court (LHC) chief justice (CJ) presently pending with the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC).
Veteran lawyer Habib Wahabul Khairi in his application maintained that his constitutional petition already pending with the SC needed to be taken up by the court in the present situation.
Khairi maintained that in 1975 the then prime minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto had established a political cell in ISI to obtain desired results in the general elections. The subsequent governments did not abolish this cell, he said. According to the petitioner, former premiers Nawaz Sharif and Benazir Bhutto also used this cell for political gains. “The existence of this cell jeopardises the impartiality and credibility of the elections and as such it should be abolished forthwith,” said Khairi.
He also maintained in his application that he had filed a complaint against LHC CJ Iftikhar Hussain Chaudhry under article 209 of the Constitution but his complaint along with the supporting record had been reportedly removed. Khairi maintained that the reference against the LHC CJ be taken up and decided before the decision on presidential reference against Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Iftikhar Chaudhry.
